Twitter, Lady Antebellum, and Urban Meyer

Monday, November 28th, 2011

Hey gang,

Its been a while since I’ve posted, so I wanted to touch base and discuss a few things. Confession- I love Twitter more than Facebook! Yea I said it and I really mean it. Why you might ask? Well, for starters, you can immediately engage in a conversation in real time.

For example let’s say your favorite musical group Lady Antebellum is performing on TV. Simply go to Twitter and in the search “space” enter “Lady Antebellum”. You will instantly find people that are discussing their performance in real time. You can agree, disagree, comment, ask them questions, etc. On Facebook people generally are friends with people they know, where as Twitter people “follow” (same as friends on FB) other people that share the same interests as they do.
Another great benefit to Twitter is the “Reality Show” effect. For example, today former Head Coach at Florida, Urban Myer, was introduced as the new Head Coach at Ohio State. I know he resigned at Florida to spend more time with his family, so I started following his daughter Nicki Myer (@Nicki_07 on twitter) to see what her reaction to this would be. This is information you will not read about in the news, nor will it be reported on Sports Center, but it’s information that is interesting to me.

If you have a favorite athlete, celebrity, etc., you can follow them on Twitter and really learn a lot personally about them. And while we are discussing it my screen name on Twitter is @mgcomedy. Shameless plug I know! Hope everyone had an awesome Thanksgiving! Soooo….Happy Tweeting!

Comedian MG Gaskin to run for President in 2012

Monday, August 8th, 2011

After much consideration, I have decided to run for President of the United States of America for 2012. I really feel like I can make a difference and would like to review the policies and changes that would take place if I was elected President.

1. If you own a convenient store and you require your customers to charge a min of $5 to use their debit card you will be required to remove your “dot’ and replace it with a “Green” dollar sign.

2. While driving on the interstate and you are driving under the speed limit in the left lane, you will loose your license and you will have to be driven around by your grandkids.

3. If you are caught throwing a cigarette butt on the ground you will have to work the third shift at waffle house “licking” ash trays.

4. You will no longer receive any kind of money whatsoever from the government WHY? Cause they’re broke

5. All US citizens will be required to buy my CD from Itunes Press One for English

I need your vote!

Gamecock Baseball Repeat as National Champs!

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Wow! So the Gamecocks baseball team has won the National Championship for the second year in a row. Those of you that know me know that I am a huge Gamecock fan. Negative at times, but a fan nonetheless. As talented as the team was this year, Coach Tanner made several references to the fact that the Gamecocks were probably not the most talented team in the country, but always just found a way to win.

In the first game with Florida they faced a bases loaded, no outs situation. If you by chance don’t know anything about baseball, scoring a run in this situation is almost 100% guaranteed. But somehow the Gamecocks played great defense and did not allow a run to score. In my opinion, the thing that gets lost in this whole situation is the price these coaches and players had to “pay” to get to this point.

As the saying goes, nobody wants to hear about the labor pains – they just want to see the baby. To succeed at anything worth having in life, you have to pay a price. Lots of these players gave up their summers in their younger years to play “travel ball” to perfect their skills and get better. I’m sure there are lots of interesting stories we will never hear that would explain the “struggle” these young men went through to become National Champs for the second year in a row.

To sum it up, you can have all the talent in the world in anything, but it will not grow if you are not willing to “pay” the price. My best friend in life – who is really my mentor – says, “There’s probably a lot of people in this world that are smarter than me, but very few that can outwork me.” So congrats to the Gamecocks! And remember that behind every successful team, there was a price that was paid to get there.

Rejection and Showbizz: An inside look at life as a comic

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Let me preface this blog by saying how awesome it is to perform in front of people, and to be blessed by God to have the talent to entertain. When I’m on stage it is the greatest feeling in the world, and something I never take for granted. To many people in the audience, this is all they see. They never really understand the sacrifice a comic makes, nor do they see the amount of rejection a comic has to absorb on a daily basis.

That being said, I recently made the decision to get back into the college market. Working the college market is extremely rewarding financially, but probably the most competitive entity in our industry. First you have to have representation by an agency that is a member of NACA (National Association of Campus Activities).

NACA has approximately 5 to 6 conferences a year, where there will be around 100 colleges represented. If you are lucky enough to find an agency, you then have to submit a DVD to the selection committee. Each conference probably has about 500-600 submissions, and they only pick about 25 performers to perform at each conference. Also, even if you perform at the conference, it doesn’t guarantee you will book any gigs.

Back in 2007 I was selected to perform at 4 NACA conferences, so when I began this process I felt pretty good about my chances. Little did I know just getting an agency to represent me would become an extremely difficult task. I started sending out emails to agencies. Although most never responded back, those that did said “our roster is full.” I started to think that perhaps the “college” thing would not happen this year, and I should focus on other areas of my business.

I’m embarrassed to say this, but mentally I gave up. Emails continued to come back saying “our roster is full”, and the deadline for submitting to the conferences was three weeks away. Since I had emailed just about every agency, there was nothing left to do except pray and hope for the best.
I can’t remember the exact day it happened, but I felt my phone vibrating, looked at the number calling, and somehow I knew this was an agency. I have no idea how I knew – but it was! Fast forward….I will submit to 4 conferences this year. Who knows… I might not book anything and be back at square zero with the college market, but the lesson learned is this: Never worry about things you can’t control in life. Work like it depends on you, and pray like it depends on God.

Why work doesn’t happen at work

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

Let me preface this by saying the Corporate America business model is completely broken and the most unproductive work environment I’ve ever seen. WHY? It is work driven and not task driven meaning companies are more concerned about how many hours you work and opposed to what tasks are completed.

Every day when I chat with my employee (she works from home and this relates to the video below) we focus on trying to complete the most important tasks for that day as it relates to profitability for the company. This may include making a phone call to a comedy club or theatre or maybe working on a specific task. I never generate useless meetings or as my mom would say “busy work.”

If you own a company ask yourself this before everyday. What is the most important thing I need to be doing right now? DO THAT!
